A model problem for conformal parameterizations of the Einstein constraint equations

We investigate the possibility that the conformal and conformal thin sandwich (CTS) methods can be used to parameterize the set of solutions of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations. To this end we develop a model problem obtained by taking the quotient of certain symmetric data on conformally žat tori. Specializing the model problem to a three-parameter family of conformal data we observe a number of new phenomena for the conformal and CTS methods. Within this family, we obtain a general existence theorem so long as the mean curvature does not change sign. When the mean curvature changes sign, we nd that for certain data solutions exist if and only if the transverse-traceless tensor is su›ciently small. When such solutions exist, there are generically more than one. Moreover, the theory for mean curvatures changing sign is shown to be extremely sensitive with respect to the value of a coupling constant in the Einstein constraint equations.

Exploring the Conformal Constraint Equations

One method of studying the asymptotic structure of spacetime is to apply Penrose’s conformal rescaling technique. In this setting, the rescaled Einstein equations for the metric and the conformal factor in the unphysical spacetime degenerate where the conformal factor vanishes, namely at the boundary representing null infinity. This problem can be avoided by means of a technique of H. Friedrich...

Conformal mappings preserving the Einstein tensor of Weyl manifolds

In this paper, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a conformal mapping between two Weyl manifolds to preserve Einstein tensor. Then we prove that some basic curvature tensors of $W_n$ are preserved by such a conformal mapping if and only if the covector field of the mapping is locally a gradient. Also, we obtained the relation between the scalar curvatures of the Weyl manifolds r...

Constructing Solutions of the Einstein Constraint Equations

The first step in the building of a spacetime solution of Einstein’s gravitational field equations via the initial value formulation is finding a solution of the Einstein constraint equations. We recall the conformal method for constructing solutions of the constraints and we recall what it tells us about the parameterization of the space of such solutions. One would like to know how to constru...

Non CMC Conformal Data Sets Which Do Not Produce Solutions of the Einstein Constraint Equations

The conformal formulation provides a method for constructing and parametrizing solutions of the Einstein constraint equations by mapping freely chosen sets of conformal data to solutions, provided a certain set of coupled, elliptic determined PDEs (whose expression depends on the chosen conformal data) admit a unique solution. For constant mean curvature (CMC) data, it is known in almost all ca...

Near-constant Mean Curvature Solutions of the Einstein Constraint Equations with Non-negative Yamabe Metrics

We show that sets of conformal data on closed manifolds with the metric in the positive or zero Yamabe class, and with the gradient of the mean curvature function sufficiently small, are mapped to solutions of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations. This result extends previous work which required the conformal metric to be in the negative Yamabe class, and required the mean curvature functio...
